Misipawistik Cree Nation is located at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River, where the Saskatchewan meets Lake Winnipeg. Just over 400 kilometres north Winnipeg (Manitoba's Capital) along Provincial Highway 6, Misipawistik is Cree for Grand Rapids. The Misipawistik Cree Nation is the host of this year’s National Cree Gathering.

The Misipawistik Cree Nation is a community that is committed to the vision outlined in the theme for this year’s gathering. “Proclaiming our Nationhood, through our territory, language, culture and traditions.”
The Misispawistik Cree Nation is still reliant upon the traditional resources as fishing, trapping and hunting make up contribute to both the substance and commercial lifestyle. As well, employment in trades in the booming northern economy including hydro development, forestry and mining continues. The Nation is also looking towards developing opportunities in the new economy of eco-tourism.

Misipawistik Cree Nation has recently opened a telepharmacy which provides the full service of a pharmacy right in the community. No longer will community have to travel out of the community to have their prescriptions filled. The telepharmacy also has a wide selection of health care products.
Local involvement in dealing with the crisis in First Nations housing, led to creation of a Sustainable Housing Pilot Project which brings an involvement in all aspects of housing to the community level.
The Cree Nation is committed to protecting and enhancing the Cree
Language. The Grand Rapids School has introduced a Cree Immersion
class at Nursery school The school will maintain a Cree Immersion
class each year for this class until there is full immersion at the
Elementary level.
Our annual Maytahway Days Indian Days bring many people together
during July and this year our Powwow will follow the National Cree
Gathering on August 18, 2007.

Misipawistik Cree Nation (MCN) was formerly known as "Grand Rapids First Nation". "Misipawistik" in the local Cree language, means "Rushing rapids" which once were a historical landmark in Misipawistik before the construction of the Hydroelectric Dam. MCN is located near Grand Rapids, Manitoba, 400 km north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is accessible via HWY 6. It is situated at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River as it runs into Lake Winnipeg and encompasses 1852.3 hectares of land. The current Chief is Ovide Mercredi, the former National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

been a fishing and hunting spot for thousands of generations of
Cree people.
