Chief's Letter
Tansi,
As Chief of the Misipawistik Cree Nation, I welcome all to the official website of the 2007 National Cree Gathering. The gathering takes place August 13-17, 2007, here in the Misipawistik Cree Nation, Grand Rapids, Manitoba. This is the 12th year of the Gathering and this year we are proud to be host to the largest Aboriginal nation in Canada, the Cree Nation. This year our theme is “Proclaiming our Nationhood, through our territory, language, culture and traditions.”
Estimated at a least 300,000 strong, the Cree Nation and Cree Nation territories extend across the north of Canada. We welcome the Cree Nation to our territory where the mighty Saskatchewan River meets Lake Winnipeg, the largest lake in Manitoba.
The Misipawistik Cree Nation will welcome the Unity Run who will begin their run in the territory of last year’s hosts, the Moose Cree Nation, Moose Factory, Ontario.
Others will travel by planes, trains, highway and waterway to come to the gathering. It will be an chance to renew old friendships and family ties, to share in the history and culture that make up the distinct Cree Nation.
As we welcome our guests from near and far, we also encourage our community members to participate in all activities and be proud hosts of the Cree Nation. To all youth and especially the youth from our community take this opportunity to observe, learn and gain a better understanding of our distinct Cree heritage.
As we grow nearer to the event our website will continue to develop and we will provide opportunities for people to participate online.
Thank you,
Chief Ovide Mercredi
